Sweden's accession to NATO advances following an agreement with the Turkish president

In exchange for assistance with Turkey's EU membership, Sweden has agreed to remove the barrier to Swedish participation in NATO.

During meetings in Vilnius, when U.S Vice President Joe Biden and NATO counterparts convene, President Erdogan intends to send Sweden's accession treaty to Parliament.

The Grand National Assembly will be given Turkey's documentation for approval, and the assembly will work with Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, to achieve ratification.

Turkey's opposition to Sweden's NATO membership has been preventing it since last year, and the confirmation of the admission agreement by the Turkish parliament is one of the final steps in the procedure. The summit's agenda appears to have been altered by the accord, which was supposed to concentrate only on the conflict in Ukraine and Kyiv's own membership aspirations.

In exchange for Turkey's help with NATO Sweden has agreed to support Turkey's ambitions to join the European Union which have been placed on hold since 2018.

"The relationship between Turkey and the EU is a matter for the EU, not for NATO, according to Stoltenberg."

Sweden promised that, in exchange for Turkey's help with NATO, it would vigorously back efforts to relaunch the country's EU membership process.

Turkish membership discussions have remained inactive since 2018 as a result of Erdogan's presidency's democratic backsliding, worries about the rule of law and human rights violations, and disagreements with EU-member Cyprus. Turkey initially sought to join the EU in 1987. 22 of the 31 NATO nations, including Sweden, are also EU members.

According to Stoltenberg and Kristersson, Sweden would assist Turkey in enhancing its customs agreements with the EU and in its efforts to get visa-free travel for its nationals to the continent. Turkish efforts to accomplish these objectives in recent years have fallen short of the requirements of the trade bloc.

Other NATO partners, particularly the United States, are displeased with Turkey's delay strategies. Jake Sullivan,,,, Biden's national security advisor, acknowledged that Biden and Erdogan had discussed a number of topics, including Sweden's NATO membership, and had made plans to meet in Vilnius for more discussions. Finland ratified after Turkey did so in April.

How to bring Ukraine closer to NATO without actually joining will be a major topic at the Vilnius summit, as will any security commitments Kyiv could require to ensure that Russia doesn't invade again when the war is over. Volodymyr Zelenskky, the president of Ukraine, will attend the conference in person on Wednesday.

"The most crucial thing,..... according to Stoltenberg, is to keep aiding Ukraine's attempts to stave off the Russian invasion."
